‘And The Chain Was Not’ is one of the documentaries by the award winning filmmaker, writer and photographer, Femi Odugbemi. The documentary tells the new FREEDOM PARK Lagos, formerly Old Broad Street Prison; (a colonial instrument of control and oppression), which has now become a peaceful place for individual and collective contemplation and interaction.
Freedom Park is a Memorial and Leisure Park dedicated to the preserving the Lagos colonial heritage and history of the Old Broad Street prison.
In the documentary, Architect Theo Lawson takes the audience through the various stages of transforming the former prison yard to a recreational and cultural centre. He reveals that the project was the brainchild of the Lagos State Government and that the architects creatively replicated what they found on the original plan such that the history of the old prison is preserved- a Museum now stands where the Records office was, a Stage where the Gallows were and Food kiosks where the Kitchen was. Also, the various cell blocks were highlighted to enhance an understanding of what they looked like.
This insightful documentary which features Prof Wole Soyinka, Jahman Anikulapo, Theo Lawson among others was narrated by Makin Soyinka.
